The Meaning Of The Coin Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A challenge coin, also known as military coin or memorial coin, among other names, is traditionally carried to signify support of an organization or unit\u2019s values, morals, and standards.  They might also be used to prove membership to the issuing organization when asked (the “challenge”) or as a commemorative award. Historically, challenge coins have been presented by unit commanders in recognition of special achievement by a member of the unit, or the unit as a whole. Some collect challenge coins as a way of honoring individuals, military units or organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Challenge Coin was used during the Roman Empire to reward soldiers and recognize their achievements. During the 17th<\/sup> century, challenge coins were used in France by the Protestant Huguenots to prove their faith and gain entry to Protestant Church services. In both World Wars, the challenge coins were used to prove identity and alliance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our challenge coin depicts the insignia marking the day Lt. William D. Lebo was taken from us so we will always remember.  The other side of the coin is looking to the future, depicting the emblem of The William D. Lebo Memorial Foundation, created in his memory.  It is a reminder to try to emulate the spirit, ethics, values, and character that Lt. Lebo brought to Lebanon County through his work, his volunteerism and his life-long dedication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
